SAG strike and possible related catastrophe averted!!
Whew. We can all breathe a sigh of relief. The Screen Actors Guild has decided not to strike against video games. Someone needs to tell SAG to do some damn research. What we have here is a case where someone said "Hey...they say games are making more money than movies now..." "What?? Well, we get paid residuals for movies! How come we don't get a tasty slice of that game pie?" And no one checked any facts. Not a damn person in the gaming industry gets paid residuals for any work they do. The publishers are the only ones who see any cut of the actual profit at all. That's the way the industry runs. And ya know what else? Sure, some games make ALOT of money. But alot of games LOSE ALOT of money. So demanding residuals is taking a big-ass chance. You working on Halo 3? All right! But what if you're working on some title that is going to sell like 10 copies. And there are more Red Rock RTX's than there are Halo 2's. Finally, let's make sure that the gaming industry wants nothing to DO with SAG. Hell, we don't need to hire these people! Why we could go to the local university and get some theater students to do it for very little (or no!) money. And they'd be thrilled! Don't get me wrong, I think it is fantastic that there are unions like SAG to make sure everyone's best interests are covered. But come on, make sure you actually ARE looking out for your people's best interests before making demands like these.
